Winslow's Word: August 2025

Winslow Hastie
President & Chief Executive Officer

The days of summer are soon coming to an end, and while that may mean lower-humidity, don’t put your fans away yet. While many of you may travel away from the Lowcountry and stay busy with children who are out of school during the summer, our staff stays focused on the execution of HCF’s Strategic Plan in three key areas: Preservation, Advocacy, and Museums (P.A.M.)

Of particular note, is the recent news about the MUSC overlay zone. After the Planning Commission met earlier this week, Historic Charleston Foundation, the Harleston Village Association and our partners in preservation have pushed for more time before the matter is taken up by City Council. As a result of our advocacy efforts, the city and MUSC are working with us to address our concerns in an amended ordinance that we will see in the next couple of weeks.

Advocacy works!

Please take note of the social and educational engagement opportunities through the year’s end and the shop's online Labor Day sale through Monday, September 1. Guests in town this weekend? We always invite you and your guests to explore both the Nathaniel Russell Museum and Aiken-Rhett House Museum (recently featured in Condé Nast Traveler) to see what is new.

The Aiken-Rhett House was recently featured in Condé Nast Traveler, August 12, 2025

Finally, I want to thank you as a member of our shared community for your investment in our work to preserve and sustain the best of Charleston. The success we achieve every day is because of YOU!

Your engagement, your financial support, your voice, your concern, and your passion for our preservation initiatives, advocacy work, and museums’ research are how and why we do what we do. I look forward to seeing you at one of our fall events, a Council meeting, or at the Nathaniel Russell or Aiken-Rhett House museums.
