NeShell on Communications with Purpose: Summer Intern Takeover 2026

As a proud graduate of Virginia State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications, I had an amazing internship experience this summer with the Communications Department at Historic Charleston Foundation! Originally from Chicago, Illinois, I came to Charleston through Explore Charleston, and the opportunity to call this city home for the summer is one I'll always be grateful for.

Before moving here, I had heard so many wonderful things about Charleston, but experiencing it firsthand has been even better. From the Southern charm and incredible food to the rich history around every corner, Charleston has quickly become a place I'll always cherish. What has stood out to me the most, though, is the people. Everyone I've met has been so welcoming and genuinely invested in helping others grow and succeed.
At Historic Charleston Foundation, I gained hands-on experience in communications and marketing by creating content for platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Adobe Express, and Canva. I became more confident in front of the camera, learned the strategy behind planning events, and even had the chance to host one of my own.

One thing that surprised me most about working at a nonprofit was the culture. I expected a fast-paced office, but instead I found a team that works hard while creating a supportive and collaborative environment. The Foundation's commitment to Preservation, Advocacy, and Museums is reflected not only in the work they do but also in the way they serve the Charleston community every day. I was also pleasantly surprised by how close-knit the team is — and I definitely wasn't expecting perks like Flex Fridays!

This internship has given me so much more than professional experience. It has introduced me to a city I now love, connected me with incredible people, and shown me what it looks like to use communications to make a meaningful impact. I'm excited to carry these experiences with me as I begin my career.
