St Michaels Church Gate Print

St Michaels Church Gate Print

Sku: 119348

$9.00
The altar gates and iron railings at St Michaels Church (80 Meeting St.) were imported from England in 1772 and offered inspiration for many other iron works throughout Charleston. Later in 1840, the courtyard gates were completed by German blacksmith J.A.W. Iusti, one of three German blacksmiths who contributed greatly to Charleston’s wrought iron structures during the 19th century. The church courtyard gates lead to the cemetery which is the final resting place of some famous historical figures – Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1746-1800), signer of the United States Constitution; John Rutledge (1739-1800), Governor of South Carolina and also a signer of the United States Constitution; Robert Young Hayne (1791-1839) Senator and Governor of South Carolina and Mayor of Charleston.
