Carolina Day! On June 28th, 1776, one of the first major battles of the American War for Independence was fought at the mouth of Charleston Harbor. A months-old, incomplete fortress on Sullivans Island, constructed of palmetto logs and sand, and garrisoned by a few hundred untested Patriot citizen-soldiers, withstood the bombardment of several British Royal Navy warships with 260 cannons. This victory was likely observed by the residents of East Bay Street as they looked across the harbor from their homes, including Nathaniel Russell, who lived on East Bay at Longitude Lane! Each year, the city of Charleston commemorates the valiant effort of the 2nd and 4th SC Regiments under the command of General William Moultrie with a parade and public address.
On Wednesday, June 28, 2023, families are invited to come to the garden at the Nathaniel Russell House to make South Carolina State Flags out of construction paper in advance of the Carolina Day parade that morning. The parade runs from 11:30-11:45 on Wednesday, June 28, and will pass directly in front of the Nathaniel Russell House. Visitors are encouraged to make a flag, and then to watch the parade from the garden or sidewalk at the Nathaniel Russell House as it passes down Meeting Street.
