William Aiken Tenement (49 South Market Street)

Description

Two B&W photographs of the William Aiken Tenement (49 South Market Street), Garabaldi Restaurant.

Constructed 1820-30; rehabilitated 1970s. This three-and-a-half story Flemish bond brick building constitutes the lone intact survivor of a range of similar dwellings constructed by William Aiken, Sr. after his 1819 purchase of the block bounded by State, Church, Market, and Linguard Streets from Peter and Violetta Wyatt. It was one of the first buildings to be thoroughly rehabilitated in the rejuvenation of Market Street. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
