a: "Battery Gadsden" sign posted over entrance. Captioned "Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island figured largely in the Revolutionary War."

b: Captioned "Originally named Fort Sullivan, it was under the command of Col. Wm. Moultrie in Rev. War."

c: Captioned "Col. Wm. Moultrie had been officer in Cherokee Indian War. At start of Rev. War was commissioned Col. of 2nd Reg't of Provincial Congress."

d: Captioned "On June 1st, 1776 British fleet of 50 vessels arr. off Charleston. Shot from Ft. Moultrie completely routed them."

e: Captioned "Col. (later Gen.) Moultrie was descended from Multrares, lairds of Scotland. He died in 1805."
