B&W photograph of 57 Coming Street (Kornahrens-Guenveur House), front elevation and showing southeast corner of the building and the piazzas.
Two copies of photo in sleeve.
Constructed ca. 1884. This two-story single house, which retains many elements associated with the Greek Revival expression of this style, was constructed by John H. Kornahrens, a manufacturer of soda water who had a bottling facility in the basement. Edward Leon Guenveur, an African American plumbing contactor, bought the house in 1925 and it has been retained by his descendants ever since. Five years earlier, Francis Ran built the two-story corner grocery next door as his shop and residence. The structure retains a masonry ground story. The weatherboarded second story is topped by a wide cornice and a deep parapet that screens the flat roof. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
