For two centuries, visitors have admired the grand Federal style townhouse of Charleston merchant Nathaniel Russell, c.1808. Set amidst spacious gardens, the Russell house is widely recognized as one of America’s most important neoclassical dwellings. The restored graceful interior with elaborate plasterwork ornamentation, geometrically shaped rooms and a magnificent free-standing staircase are among the most exuberant in America. Furnished with decorative and fine art, the house evokes the gracious lifestyle of the city’s merchant elite during the early 19th century. The Nathaniel Russell House is owned and operated as a museum by Historic Charleston Foundation.
