Constructed ca. 1850. At the time of the Civil War this three-story late-Greek Revival store building was owned by a German grocer named Peter Christopher Schroder, who lived on the floors above. Italianate style alterations from the late-19th century included the removal of the southeast corner for a typical Charleston store entry with a cast-iron column. Later occupied by the Doscher family as a grocery store, it served as the forerunner for a family business that expanded to a supermarket chain still in existence. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
