The Lost Architecture: February 2021 Edition

Posted: March 3, 2021

41 Archdale. There’s no history of this building in HCF’s Archives. What is known is that the building once served as the “Old Fire Engine House” and the Powers Carpet Cleaning Company. It was demolished ca. 1951 for the construction of a parking lot. (News & Courier articles; This is Charleston; Old Codgers’ Charleston Address Book). HCf newsletter reader Adrienne Jacobsen also contributed this bit of information: “Market Street didn’t always cut through between Logan and Archdale, so this was one of the buildings demolished to alter the street layout.” Thank you for that extra info, Adrienne!
