Water Dialogues: Carolyn Kousky, Executive Director at the Wharton Risk Management

April 20, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Register

Charleston is confronted with every known water hazard – storm surge, tidal, riverine, stormwater, groundwater, and compound flooding. Of course, each of these is exacerbated by sea-level rise. Charleston also faces intense land use and development pressures. As a community, we have frequently talked about surge and tidal flooding. But what is truly at risk? How can we prepare for and recover from these inevitable water hazards? To expand the conversation around water and resiliency, HCF is launching the “Water Dialogues,” a free virtual lecture series to engage the Lowcountry community and inform decision-making about best practices in water management, assessing risk, and the many quality of life issues related to water for this generation and the next.

HCF, in partnership with the City of Charleston Office of Resilience, is excited to announce the first webinar in the Water Dialogue series will take place on Wednesday, April 20 at 4:00 pm. It will feature Carolyn Kousky, Executive Director at the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center at the University of Pennsylvania, who most recently launched a project focused on how to better protect low- and moderate-income families financially from escalating flood expenses. Ms. Kousky will discuss the costs of flooding and natural disasters for Charleston – beyond the actual price of disaster recovery.

This talk will be virtual, and admission to log in is free. Registration is required to access the webinar.
