Treasure Hunting Among the Debris

Join us for a Facebook Live treasure hunt with HCF’s Director of Museums Lauren Northup as she explores rat middens uncovered at the Nathaniel Russell Kitchen House. Rats’ nests are an archaeologist’s dream as the material collected by the rodents often yields important insight into history. As work advances on removal of the modern fabric of the Kitchen House, several middens have been uncovered and already explored. From buttons to kitchen utensils to fragments from a reading primer and a newspaper dated 1833, we learn more and more about the everyday lives of the enslaved at the Russell House.
