The Aiken-Rhett House Museum has a preservation style different than other Historic Houses on the Charleston peninsula. The Aiken-Rhett House’s preservation style is “preserved-as-found”, and has resulted in a hauntingly beautiful time capsule at 48 Elizabeth Street.

Each Thursday during May, Historic Charleston Foundation invites you to dive a bit deeper with Properties Manager, Justin Schwebler, for a more in-depth look at some of the preservation projects and efforts at this preserved-as-found house museum. This tour will show how the house’s conditions are monitored, how preservation methods are performed, and what it means to maintain a preserved-as-found house. (Hint: it is not putting down mothballs and walking away!). While some historical interpretation of the house will be included, it will not be the main focus of this specific tour.

Specialty Preservation Tours with Justin Schwebler during the month of May are included with admission to the Aiken-Rhett House Museum. Reservations not required. Enhanced tours will be held at 1:30 pm on Thursday May 4, 11, 18, and 25 and will last approximately 30-45 minutes. Guests are encouraged to stay and explore the House Museum with audio tour after the preservation tour. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door of the Aiken-Rhett House Museum.
