Historic Charleston Foundation’s purpose is to preserve and protect the historical, architectural and cultural character of Charleston and its historic environs and to educate the public about its history and the benefits that are derived from preservation. The Margaretta Childs Archives supports the mission by collecting, preserving, and making its resources available for research. Access to the materials is provided under conditions that ensure their preservation, maintain their physical integrity, prevent their loss, and that are in compliance with requirements that respect confidentiality, privacy, copyright, and any other specific legal conditions. Therefore, policies are in effect that govern access to materials in the Margaretta Childs Archives.
The majority of resources in the Margaretta Childs Archives are not online and they often span a variety of formats. Therefore, in-person visits to the Margaretta Childs Archives are encouraged. Please refer to the Archives Usage Policy for further instructions.
The Margaretta Childs Archives does not have staff available to conduct in-depth research. However, if you are unable to visit the Archives in person, the Archivist may be able to select and copy materials for you. Your request must be specific. Please consult the Online Catalog to assist you in determining which materials you may need. Fees for this service and for copying apply. Please review and sign the Research Request Policy and complete a Request for Copies.
Materials from the Margaretta Childs Archives may be reproduced for personal, scholarly, or commercial purposes via photocopying or scanning to the extent that the physical condition of the materials and legal restrictions permit, and that the reproduction is in compliance with the requirements that respect confidentiality, privacy, copyright, and any other specific legal conditions. Please refer to the Reproduction Policy.
For use of materials from the Margaretta Childs Archives in a publication (print or digital) or for commercial purposes, a Permission to Publish form must be completed and signed.
