St Michaels Church Print

St Michaels Church Print

$9.00
Construction of the church began in 1752 on the site of the first St. Philips Church (80 Meeting St) which relocated to the present location at 146 Church Street. The exterior was completed largely in 1756 and the impressive steeple rises to a height of 186 feet. The interior of the church includes the original box pews constructed of red cedar and elaborate plaster, paintwork and stained glass provided by Tiffany and Company. The church bells were stolen by the British in 1782 but later returned, and the church also received shell damage to the chancel during the Civil War. St Michaels Church is a prominent architectural symbol in Charleston with one unique element; daily its bells play the musical score of the opera Porgy and Bess.
