The Palmetto tree thrives along the South Carolina coast due to its tolerance to salt spray and cold and became the state tree after a the Battle of Fort Moultrie in 1776. Earlier that year, a crude palmetto log fort on Sullivan’s Island as a first line of defense for Charleston and successfully withstood a sustained attack by the British.
Seafaring captains from east coast ports including Charleston, would impale fresh pineapples – souvenirs of their lengthy travels to tropical ports – atop the porch railings of their homes when they returned. It was a symbol then that the man of the house was home and became a symbol of Southern hospitality still visible to this day.
