Found at the Unitarian Church Graveyard on Archdale St, the sundial is the oldest known device for measuring time and the most ancient scientific instrument. There are meanings attached to the elements used in a sundial. The sun stands for the eternal spirit, the shadow represents the fleeting physical world, and the gnomon (the piece that casts the shadow) stands for man’s intelligence. The combination of all three elements stands for the union of heaven and earth.
