The original of this magnificent Chinese exportporcelain service is in the dining room of Charleston's famed NathanielRussell House, c.1808. Butterflies, a popular design pattern in China, areoften found as decoration on porcelain. Perhaps the popularity of the butterflystems from the fact that the Chinese word for butterfly, tieh, is a pun whichexpresses the wish that the owner might live to a ripe old age. Iron Red with 22K.
