Defences of Charleston, American Civil War 1863

Description

Illustrated London News illustration (engraving) showing the cannons and fortifications built by the Confederates at Charleston, in anticipation of a major engagement with the Federal Army. Seated and standing soldiers in the foreground. Forts Sumter, Moultrie, and Johnson can be seen in the background. Presumably, the location of this scene would be on the High Battery. Caption reads "The War in America: The Defences (sic) of Charleston, Looking Seaward--From a Sketch by our Special artist." From same newspaper as image 2007.003.7, dated April 4, 1863. This engraving has been cut from the original newspaper (see verso).
