Surpassing hundreds of thousands of charities nationwide to make it through the first phase where $2.5 million was given to 100 charities, these seven organizations are teaming up as they enter CHASE’s second phase where another $2.5 million is up for grabs. Starting May 19, 2011, Facebook users can, for one week, vote again to help decide which of the winning 100 charities from the first phase will get to share $2.5 million.

Trustees of HCF undertake cruise ship study

At a specially called meeting on Dec. 13, trustees of Historic Charleston Foundation made a commitment to provide the resources and expertise necessary to undertake an independent study of the cruise ship industry’s impacts on the city’s economy, environment and quality of life.

Harleston Village House Protected Through HCF Revolving Fund

Another historic house in the Harleston Village neighborhood will be restored and protected as a single family residence, aiding in the preservation of the neighborhood’s 19th century traditional character, thanks to Historic Charleston Foundation’s Edmunds Revolving Fund. HCF completed the sale of the Charles Augustus Magwood House, 61-63 Smith St., to a private purchaser on Nov. 2, 2009.

Harleston Village property saved from subdivision, offered for sale to preservation-minded buyer

Through several Revolving Fund purchases over the past three years, most recently the c. 1824 antebellum residence at 61/63 Smith Street, HCF’s board of trustees hopes to preserve the architecture and traditional character of Harleston Village. The house is now on the market for $2.15 million and will be sold to a preservation-minded buyer who will restore it to a single-family residence.

HCF seeks to purchase rare Charleston desk

HCF was immediately receptive to Winterthur Museum’s recent offer to sell HCF a Charleston-made desk and bookcase by Jacob Sass currently on loan and exhibited in the Nathaniel Russell House. Opportunities to purchase such an object are as rare as the item itself. Now that the purchase commitment has been made, HCF must raise the funds to acquire this outstanding example of late 18th century furniture so that it will remain on public view in Charleston.
