Beethoven on Church Street

First Baptist Church, 61 Church Street, c. 1822

Featuring Dr. Edward Hart and students from the College of Charleston School of the Arts. The year 1822 marks not only the construction of First Baptist Church,
known as the “mother church” of Baptists in the South, but was also the time during which Ludwig van Beethoven composed his miraculous Ninth Symphony, written in
total deafness.

Romantic Interlude

Historic French Huguenot Church, 44 Queen Street, c. 1844

The Huguenot Church was Charleston’s first Gothic Revival ecclesiastical building. Nearly destroyed during the Civil War and Great Earthquake of 1886, the church’s
1888 restoration inaugurated a period of its primary use as a shrine to all Huguenot settlers of the New World. Within this historic setting Dr. Edward Hart will lead students
from the College of Charleston School of the Arts through a performance of 19th century romantic masterworks.

Doin’ the Charleston: Jazz on High Battery

Experience the rich, soulful sounds of American jazz played in one of the genre’s principal cradles – Charleston, South Carolina – led by noted musician and author Jack
McCray. The Gullah culture of Charleston’s sea islands had a huge impact on jazz, America’s classical music. The evolution of Charleston jazz is one of the last great
unknown stories in American history.

Athens Recorder Ensemble

Saturday, April 17, 5:15 p.m.
St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 67 Anson St., c. 1835

The Athens Recorder Ensemble will return for a command performance of its period recorder concert, performed in the beautiful setting of historic St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. The ensemble will present a sampling of musical genres through the ages, selected to appeal to a wide variety of audiences and featuring music from the Renaissance, Baroque and Modern periods. Kevin Kelly of the Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia, Athens, will set the stage by offering a brief historical commentary for each piece.
