Period Concerts

Join us for some of the most popular events on the annual Festival schedule, our special Festival musical concerts. Each offers a rare chance to experience period music in intimate historic settings with entertaining and educational interpretations. Seating is limited, so early reservations are encouraged.

Beethoven on Church Street

Join Professor Enrique Graf and students from the College of Charleston School of the Arts performing two piano sonatas by Beethoven. The master composer’s work will be played at First Baptist Church, a building designed by master architect, Robert Mills, in 1822. Mills, a native of Charleston, also designed the Washington Monument and is known as the nation’s first professional architect.

The South Carolina Broadcasters are an-award winning old-time trio performing music of the 19th and early 20th century. Tight harmonies and exceptional instrumentation give The Broadcasters an authentic old-time sound. Their music comes from hills and the hollers, the heart and the soul of the rural South. Be it the haunting sound of a solo fiddle or the echo of a country church house, The Broadcasters capture the emotional urgency of this uniquely American moment in history.

Doin’ the Charleston: Jazz in the French Quarter

Experience the rich, soulful sounds of American jazz played by Leah Suarez and Company in one of the genre’s principal cradles – Charleston, South Carolina.  The Gullah culture of Charleston’s sea islands had a huge impact on jazz, America’s classical music. The evolution of Charleston jazz is one of the last great unknown stories in American history. This concert will be dedicated to the memory of musician and author Jack McCray.
