The wealth generated by the cultivation and trade in rice, cotton and indigo enabled Charlestonians to build substantial houses and furnish them with the latest in furniture styles. Some pieces were imported, but local artisans also produced works of outstanding quality. Due to the proximity to the Caribbean, mahogany was the wood of choice and designs were often embellished with bellflower decoration, excellent threadwork and tapered legs.
