Volunteer Appreciation Party

Over 350 volunteers, homeowners and guests gathered on High Battery at the historic Capt. James Missroon House on May 19 for the 2008 Volunteer Appreciation Party to celebrate the culmination of the 61st Festival of Houses and Gardens. The spirited crowd feasted on barbecue and assorted Southern delicacies by Tidewater Foods and Catering and enjoyed a gorgeous spring day by the harbor. Live bluegrass music performed by the Bluestone Ramblers capped the festive atmosphere.

Long-time volunteers were recognized for their outstanding years of service and many extraordinary volunteers and homeowners were inducted into the Frances R. Edmunds Society.

For only the second year, awards were presented to recognize those volunteers who embody all of the characteristics of the ideal docent or street marshal.

The Docent of the Year award is presented to the top docent or senior docent. This year's recipient, Jane Nepveux, is an extraordinary ambassador for the Foundation to homeowners, visitors and fellow volunteers.

"Jane is a true Southern lady in the best sense of the word," said Leigh Handal, Director of Communications. "She is famous for her thank you notes, as every homeowner and volunteer with whom Jane has ever worked received one. More than that, each message is personal and heartfelt. I don’t think Jane has ever met a stranger."

The Street Marshal of the Year Award, presented to the top street marshal or senior street marshal, has been named in honor of the late Ward Smith. This year, the award recognized a deserving street marshal couple, the team of Carol and Arthur Knapp.

The Knapps go beyond the typical street marshal duties of directing visitors to the next site. They take the guests under their wings and aid them in any number of ways. The couple brought two-way radios on tour so that they could advise each other of approaching groups that might need assistance.

V.C. Sutton, street marshal chairman and first recipient of the Ward Smith Street Marshal of the Year Award, tells all of the street marshals that they are "to perform like well –bred border collies, proactively guiding and directing the visitors."

The Knapps, he says, "are indeed fine border collies, however, they have a lot of St. Bernard, minus the cognac, mixed in."

We thank and salute all of the volunteers who reached special milestones in 2008 in their years of service with the Foundation.
