Tour the Aiken-Rhett House African Americana at the Aiken-Rhett House

History of the Aiken-Rhett House Slavery in Charleston

The West Bedroom

Originally, the bed displayed in this room was draped. The draping fabrics were attached to the ceiling with a circular "corona," the outline of which is still visible. Deming and Bulkley of New York made much of the furniture in this room and throughout the house.

Although the first floor "public" rooms were updated throughout the nineteenth century, the upper floors of the house retain much of the original 1817 woodwork. The fireplaces were really the only significant pieces that were changed. The wood mantles were replaced with marble and updated to burn coal.
