Stairhall
The Aikens' guests used the main stairhall to enter the second floor. Unlike the first floor, the upper floors were never
reconfigured and show the original plan of the house, a central hallway with two rooms on either side.
On the second floor, a chandelier hangs in the center of the hallway and sconces hang on either side of it. The three fixtures
are a remarkable record of the evolution of lighting: the chandelier is oil burning, the sconce on one side was piped for gas in
the 1850s, and the sconce on the other side was wired for electricity in the twentieth century.
