Tour the Aiken-Rhett House African Americana at the Aiken-Rhett House

History of the Aiken-Rhett House Slavery in Charleston

The Marble Entrance

The marble entrance replaced the previous front door on the piazza-side of the house. It was created during the extensive renovations of the house that took place in the 1830s after William and Harriet Aiken were married and decided to make this house their primary residence. The grand sweep of marble stairs, cast iron work, mahogany railing and French chandelier were designed to impress visitors. During the renovations, much of the interior was updated to the then-popular Greek Revival style. Heavy molding with acanthus leaves and the Greek key motif are hallmarks of this style.
