The Ballroom
Many of Charleston's grandest balls before the Civil War took place in this room, which guests entered from the piazza.
Gold-framed mirrors hanging in this room reflected the gaslights and candles at night making the room seem larger.
Although the wallpaper dates to the 1850s, the floral pattern is still evident. Originally, the wallpaper was a bright
red and silver. In subsequent decades it has faded to brown and gold. Historic Charleston Foundation continues to work
on its conservation, as it was also badly damaged during Hurricane Hugo in 1989.
